8 DAYS | 7 NIGHTS
Ultimate Highlight of the Great Migrationi

Tour Overview

In this 8-day photographic safari, we will focus our cameras on three key sectors of Serengeti, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the largest concentration of wildlife on the continent. We start in the west, following large herds as they navigate river systems that draw crocodiles and predators. We continue toward Seronera in central Serengeti, where permanent water keeps lions, leopards, and cheetahs within reach throughout the year.

On day five, we can add a balloon flight, giving a different angle of movement and open country. We then move south to document breeding activity and newborn life should the season allow. On day seven, we visit the Ngorongoro Crater, an extinct volcanic caldera that supports a dense resident population and offers strong chances for close sightings of rare black rhinos. The final leg for this 8-day becomes Tarangire, best known for its large herds of elephants but also give a glimpse to migration only next to the Serengeti.

Duration: 8 Days

Day 2:

Fly to Western Serengeti

We start the day early with breakfast, after which our safari representative meets us at the hotel lobby for the transfer to Arusha Airport. From here, we fly to the Western Serengeti, whose name comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning endless plains. This region follows the path of the Grumeti River, a lifeline that attracts herds of wildebeest and zebra during the migration. The river’s crossings are dramatic moments for photographers, with scenes of movement, dust, and the tension between predators and prey.

The open terrain and seasonal vegetation make this area ideal for tracking and capturing detailed wildlife behavior. At the airstrip, our driver guide welcomes us and transfers the group to Singita Serengeti House. We arrive in time for lunch and some rest before heading out on our first game drive through the western corridor. As evening approaches, we return to the lodge to review photographs, share observations by the fire, and prepare for the following day.

Day 4:

Western Serengeti to Central Serengeti (Seronera)

After breakfast, we leave the western corridor and begin our journey toward central Serengeti, an area known as Seronera. This part of the park forms the core of the ecosystem and supports wildlife throughout the year. Its network of rivers maintains water even in the dry months, drawing lions, leopards, and cheetahs that use the open plains for hunting. Seronera also acts as a gathering point during the Great Migration, as herds move through in huge columns before spreading toward the north.

We carry packed lunches to remain in the field longer, using every hour for observation and photography in changing light conditions.By late afternoon, we arrive at Meliá Serengeti Lodge, overlooking broad plains with frequent wildlife activity nearby. The rest of the day is for rest, perhaps a swim, a short nap, or time spent organizing photographs from the day’s drive. In the evening, we meet around the fire, share notes on sightings, and settle for a quiet night.

Day 5:

Central Serengeti - Full Day

We begin early, taking advantage of the morning light to capture the migration from a new perspective. An optional hot air balloon flight provides an elevated view of the herds, showing the vast scale of movement that is difficult to grasp from the ground. From the air, we can photograph the patterns formed by wildebeest and zebra as they move through the plains, along with predators following their paths. After landing, we continue with a game drive, documenting wildlife interactions along the way before returning to the lodge for lunch and a short rest.

Later in the afternoon, we set out again to cover different areas of Seronera. The changing light and renewed animal activity make this time valuable for photography, particularly around water sources and open grasslands. Returning to the lodge in the evening, we review images from the day, discuss techniques, and plan camera settings and routes for the following morning.

Day 6:

Central Serengeti to Southern Serengeti

After breakfast, we head south toward the Ndutu area, where the open plains meet the woodlands that mark the boundary between Serengeti and Ngorongoro. This region is central to the calving season of the Great Migration, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few weeks, attracting predators and providing remarkable photographic opportunities.

Beyond the migration, Ndutu is known for its dense concentration of big cats, diverse birdlife, and accessible off-road tracking permitted in designated areas. We carry packed lunches to stay out longer in the field, exploring seasonal lakes and short-grass plains before continuing to Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7:

Ngorongoro Crater

Following in the early morning, we leave for Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the Big Five. The caldera supports around 2,500 large animals including buffalo, black rhino, lion, hippo, and a dense hyena population. Arriving in Ngorongoro, we descend 600 meters into the crater floor to continue our photographic activity. The landscape plays a secondary role in the migration, offering grazing for some wildebeest and zebra during movements between Serengeti plains and surrounding rangelands, giving us a final view of the herds within a different setting.

In the afternoon, we take lunch then continue with a few hours of sightings in different sections near water and on open grass. The crater provides a unique change from Serengeti since wildlife remains within clear view during much of the day. After a few hours following lunch, we exit the crater rim road and make our way toward Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge, where dinner awaits after a memorable day. Whilst here, you could opt for a spa treatment, take a plunge in the pool, or take easy-slow evening, enjoy dinner and a good night sleep.

Day 8:

Ngorongoro to Tarangire – Drive back to Arusha and Transfer to the airport

After an early breakfast, we leave Ngorongoro and drive toward Tarangire National Park, our final stop before returning to Arusha. Keeping Tarangire for the last day adds balance to this safari adventure, as the park plays an important role in a lesser-known migration of wildebeest, zebra, and buffalo that move in and out with the changing seasons. Its permanent river acts as a magnet during the dry months, drawing elephants in large numbers along with lions and leopards that follow the herds.

The mix of baobab landscapes and wildlife movement offers a strong finish for photography and observation. In the afternoon, we take a packed lunch before returning to Arusha. Depending on your flight time, your driver guide will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure after arriving in Arusha. We wish you safe travels and hope that our paths will cross again in the future.
